What are the current trends that could transform your commercial interior space?

At Glenside, we believe it is important to keep in touch with the latest developments in the fit out industry. The world of office design is always rapidly changing, and we are used to working in a fast-paced environment. Even so, workplace design is going through one of the largest shake ups we have ever experienced. As we at Glenside make it our aim to keep up to date with current trends - from fixtures to fittings and colours to furniture - we are able to offer customers a greater range of designs when it comes to commercial interiors, building on our huge wealth of industry experience as well as our knowledge of the latest trends.

Here are some of the more recent design developments which we think could transform your commercial interior space:

  1. Home office design: With more and more people becoming accustomed to working from home, it will be important to create an office environment which incorporates some of those home comforts. This is a growing trend which really has taken off since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic. The aim is to make workers feel as comfortable as possible, which will in turn make them feel valued. Research published by AllWork from Gensler’s work-from-home study discovered that a hybrid model is likely required for many companies. This could see more elements of home come into the office environment to make it more comfortable and engaging for employees. Beanbags, classic house plants and textures that evoke a sense of warmth, comfort and familiarity may become more common place.
  2. Video conferencing space: A general trend which has significantly risen recently is the use of video calling technology. According to research by PwC, over half of executives expect to offer remote working in the near future. With information like this, the need for flexible working and video conferencing tools is crucial to keeping the workforce connected. Spaces will need to be equipped with all the required components to gain the maximum benefits. The acoustics of the building will need to be thought about as well as dealing with the cabling to facilitate any new technology. With an estimated 58% of businesses now using video conferencing for their everyday operations it is certainly a growing trend which you may need to incorporate into your day to day business activities.
  3. Sustainable offices: The world is becoming more and more aware of the impact we have on the environment. This is why as businesses we need to look at ways of reducing our carbon footprint. The use of sustainable materials and design practices will help do this. Opting for a “green” office can be a good way for a business to demonstrate their commitment to the environment, and therefore potentially strengthen their brand image. Knight Frank reported that, “Covid-19 has kickstarted a new wave of green thinking among employees: 56% of 17,149 consumers feel that reducing single-use plastics, lowering carbon footprints and companies behaving more sustainability have become ‘a lot more important’ since the pandemic.”
  4. Hubs: Offices are continuing to become cultural and collaborative hubs. The hub and spoke model gives employees greater flexibility to work closer to home in smaller regional offices when day-to-day activity allows, and also to travel in to a larger central hub office (a company headquarters) when larger team meetings, regional discussions and strategic activity are planned. With employees expecting more flexibility we predict this model will be used by more companies in the future.

With a return to the office date unknown for many companies, we feel these trends are the ones with the most prevalence at the current time. Now is also an ideal time to integrate any new ideas you have for your office before the workforce returns. If you would like to talk to our team about any of these design ideas or the plans you may have to redevelop and redefine your offices, please get in touch.

Eco-friendly offices have a reputation for being costly because it requires additional planning and sourcing of more ‘unusual’ materials. However, this isn’t always the case.
